Heat, Health, and Housing: From risks to resilience in a rapidly warming world
September 14, 2023 @ 6:00 pm
Join HBCU SCI for the second event in our 2023 Sustainability & Social Justice series with Dr. Vivek Shandas from Portland State University for a dynamic session entitled “Heat, Health, and Housing: From Risks to Resilience in a Rapidly Warming World.”
This session will focus on providing an understanding of the increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of climate-induced extreme events, which pose grave challenges to urban infrastructure and human health. Learn how human-induced climate change is causing dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and affecting the lives of billions of people around the world, despite efforts to reduce the risks. Research has shown that people and ecosystems least able to cope with these challenges are being hardest hit.
The research also indicates that climate change is a grave and mounting threat to the wellbeing and health of the planet as the world faces unavoidable multiple climate hazards over the next two decades with global warming of 1.5°C (2.7°F). Even temporarily exceeding this warming level will result in additional severe impacts, some of which will be irreversible. Risks for society will increase, including those to infrastructure. The quality and conditions of housing — including neighborhood history, building materials, green space, and social cohesion and tenure among others — are essential to mediate the extent of the impact of extreme events. In this presentation, Dr. Shandas will provide an overview of the ways in which extreme heat impacts human health and highlight case studies of approaches for reducing exposure to neighborhood hazards.
Presenter
Vivek Shandas, PhD Professor & Director of the Sustaining Urban Places Research Lab Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning, Portland State University
